Jazz clubs in Mumbai, Chennai and later Kochi cultivated a modest community of saxophonists, and the instrument became associated with urban modernity. Recent scholarship (Raghavan, 2020; Bhatia, 2023) identifies three contexts where the saxophone thrives: film scores, independent jazz ensembles, and cross‑cultural fusion projects.
