Roy, a skilled astronaut with a troubled past, is tasked with traveling to Neptune's moon, Triton, where the last probe, LIMA, was supposed to be located. His mission is to investigate the cause of the probes' failure and, hopefully, find any signs of his father's fate. Along the way, Roy confronts his own personal demons, including the relationship with his wife, Jane (played by Ruth Negga), and his son, who suffers from a rare illness.
