Even if you successfully flash "universal" firmware, your ISP might reject the device. ISPs authenticate ONTs using serial numbers and LOID (Logical ID). If the new firmware changes how the device identifies itself to the OLT (Optical Line Terminal) at your ISP's central office, your internet will simply stop working.
