They viewed pre-colonial Filipinos as barbarians awaiting civilization, portrayed the Spanish era as a mission of salvation, and depicted American intervention as benevolent tutelage. The heroes of these stories were the colonizers and, later, the ilustrados (enlightened elite) who mimicked their masters.
