While Agoncillo is best known for the English-language textbook History of the Filipino People , his earlier work, (1941), co-authored with Gregorio Zaide, marked a critical early point in his career.

For nearly four centuries, Philippine history was written by foreigners: first by Spanish friars and colonial functionaries, then by American colonial administrators and their Filipino elite collaborators. The heroes of these stories were the colonizers and, later, the ilustrados (enlightened elite) who mimicked their masters.
