This hybrid was born out of necessity. In the 2010s, as Malaysian Muslim women traveled to Umrah and interacted with Gulf Arabs via social media (Instagram and TikTok), they fell in love with the regal look of the Arab scarf. However, the tropical humidity of Malaysia meant a thick Arab abaya and heavy fabric were impractical.
