Prameela made her cinematic debut at the age of 12 in the 1968 Malayalam film Inspector . Her major breakthrough came in 1973 with K. Balachander's Tamil classic , where she played the lead role of Lalitha. Despite her talent, she was quickly pigeonholed into provocative and antagonistic characters rather than lead roles of substance.
