: While Samrat Bindusara rules, the palace is rife with internal enemies. Helena, the daughter of Seleucus Nicator and second wife of Chandragupta, conspires to overthrow Bindusara to place her own son, Justin, on the throne.
The cinematography—dark skies, flickering lamps, and the anxious faces of the court—sets the tone for the entire series. Bindusar’s immediate paranoia is terrifying. He orders the guards to find any pregnant Kshatriya queen and "take care of the situation." This instantly creates the central conflict: a father ordered to kill his own son.
