Carnegie catches up to them. In the ensuing confrontation, Eli and Solara are cornered. To protect Solara from being killed, Eli surrenders the book. Carnegie, triumphant, takes the book and shoots Eli, leaving him for dead in a ditch. Solara is taken back to the town.
